A common sight along roads, alleys, and rural landscapes, carrying the medium-voltage lines that bring electricity from substations into our neighborhoods — the microvasculature of the grid.

The grid, mostly
If the wires business has an atomic unit, this is it: a pole, a crossarm, a handful of insulators, repeated until it reaches the edge of the grid. BEPCO's founding was largely a matter of planting them from town to town in straight lines, one after another, until the places at the end of the wire had light. The Company's records give each pole its own number, though no lineman has ever told two of them apart. Its Instruction Booklet is one of the shortest in the Archive, the design having changed little since the first pole went into the ground.
